Project Connect: North Corridor

The next phase of Project Connect!

Project Connect: North Corridor is of the next step of Project Connect, a collaborative effort of the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the City of Austin, Capital Metro and the Lone Star Rail District to advance regional high‐capacity transit for central Texas.  The study is expected to last 18-24 months and will result in the identification of public transportation projects and services to improve mobility and access in the corridor.

Of the 100 most congested roads in Texas, six are located in the North Corridor that connects the communities of Georgetown, Round Rock, Pflugerville and central Austin.  Traffic congestion in this corridor costs—its people, businesses and environment—time and money, and threatens our quality of life.

Of the nine corridors identified by Project Connect with public participation,  the North Corridor ranked the highest based on Congestion, Core (trips to downtown Austin),  Centers (number of higher density areas for employment, shopping and residential), Constraints (space to build), and Growth criteria.

    More parking at Commuter Rail stations so public can drive to the train station in the neighborhood and park and ride.

    We live in Pflugerville and wish to see the Techridge Transit Center expanded by bringing in busses and trains down Dessau Road/Cameron Road as well as connecting this road with Techridge and other transit centers. We use Dessau/Cameron on a daily basis. I often take it all the way to 51st street/Muller development area. This same route is often used as an access into town for others to avoid IH35/Mopac during high traffic volume times or when there are collisions obstructing the road. Some bus routes exist on this road closer into town but no transit service is available in the northern portion of this route. We would need to be able to connect with other busses/trains to complete our commutes but this would be a helpful start.

    The misguided effort to not expand major roads and freeways in Austin and instead try to force people out of their vehicles and into mass transit is an abortion.

    Austin residents have consistently made it clear that they don’t want inconvenient and highly-subsidized rail. But those with a political agenda who ignore reality are going to saddle us with a nonfunctional system. See the trial light-rail line if you want a glimpse of what a disaster awaits the citizens of Austin if the politically-motivated get their way.

    Mopac, I-35 and 183 need expanding. The expansion of Mopac was proposed in 1998 by the Texas Department of Transportation and the misguided East/west paved-over deer trails like Koenig, 35th Street and 45th Street need widening. Those are the real solutions to the traffic problems in the 4th most congested city in the entire United States — not some dreamed-up utopian light rail system.

    Increasing the capacity of the freeways and major arteries in Austin is the solution. Austin is not like NYC or Boston or D.C. Trying to fit Austin into a mass transit model is a huge mistake that will haunt our citizens for decades to come.

    • Sorry you feel that way, Robert. I assure you it is not the intent of the Project Connect: North Corridor team nor any of our partners to force anyone out of their cars. Our aim is to provide quality transportation choices that are attractive options for people who want to occasionally avoid the cost and hassle of driving. We all benefit when people have many options available from which to choose. Even if you never use the service yourself, you would benefit from the reduction in vehicles on the road, economic development, clean air, etc.

      In addition, Central Texans have actually shown that they support transit – with the All Systems Go! (MetroRail) initiative garnering nearly 64% of the vote in 2004. In addition, during the outreach for Project Connect and the North Corridor study, well over 80% of participants surveyed indicated they believe high-capacity transit should be explored in order to address our growth challenges.

      Expanding many of the roadways you mentioned is simply not a viable option. Existing neighborhoods and businesses would have to be displaced at considerable expense and likely substantial local opposition.

      To address our growing transportation needs, we need it all. Roads, Transit, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, etc. No one project will be a silver bullet – it will require all the tools in the tool box to keep our region moving.       Thank you Robert for stating the obvious truth. We live in a place where the politicians all want to create a fantasy land that could is completely incompatible with the real world.

      As a 53 y.o. North / N.E Austin resident of 44 years, you are absolutely correct in your assessment of current Highway expansion.
      And East – West travel . . . .
      The “” website lays out the facts.
      Also: finish the double decker on I-35 & start the one needed for MoPac.

    There is a large area directly east of downtown that is completely ignored by this plan. Is it not possible include those folks living in and around the MLK/183/FM 969 area? That area is experiencing rapid growth with more planned projects coming. It is already a very heavily car dependent area and with Mobile Loaves and Fishes moving a very large homeless people refuge compound out there it will require even more public transportation. Please consider running a line down MLK to FM 969 or better yet to the Expo center.

    • Thanks for the comments, Sarah. Project Connect is focused on High-Capacity transit ( High-capacity transit projects are typically much more significant (cost, impact, etc) than local transit, such as fixed route bus service (MetroBus). Project Connect envisions high-capacity transit on the corridors that are justified due to their current land use, growth, congestion, etc. However, that does not mean that other areas will not have transit service. Local service can meet needs on other corridors that are not yet suitable for the kind of investment that high-capacity transit would require. Capital Metro is aware of the changes occurring on the corridor you mention, and is evaluating the possibility of MetroBus service in those areas. Thanks again for your comments.

    I’ve lived in Austin for nearly 50 years. I have recently begun to grow tired of emphasis on downtown by those who wish to improve transportation (or anything else) in Austin. I don’t want to go downtown; I will never live downtown; I do not work downtown. I would like to see attention paid to transportation extending northward, toward Tech Ridge and even Pflugerville. Further, I want more attention paid to North Lamar, first by code enforcement to remove unsightly businesses, and then reducing the number of business driveways that enter North Lamar, putting sidewalks on both sides of North Lamar, and consolidating construction projects so that the street is not torn up practically on a weekly basis. Also, without parking at rail transit centers, I cannot use them; there is no center within walking distance of my home and taking a bus to a center is very time-consuming. “High capacity” transit options are not very helpful if people cannot get to the transit centers.
